The collection contains correspondence, accounts, land records, estate materials, and other papers of the following persons: James Patton (1692-1755), early settler and sheriff of Augusta County, Va.; William Preston (1729-1783) of "Greenfield," Botetourt County, Va., surveyor, militia and Revolutionary War officer; John Preston (1764-1827) of "Horseshoe Bottom," Montgomery County, Va., militia officer, state legislator, and Virginia state treasurer; Francis Preston (1765-1835) of Abingdon, Va., politician; William Preston (1770-1821), U.S. Army officer; and Thomas Lewis Preston (1781-1812) of Lexington, Va. Materials concern the patenting and settlement of land in southwestern Virginia and Kentucky; the activities of surveyors in Augusta and Montgomery counties, Va., and the settlement of Botetourt and Wythe counties, Va.; salt and iron mining and manufacture; Indians, African-American slavery, and the Revolution in southwestern Virginia; and banking, politics, and mineral springs in Virginia. Also, contains miscellaneous papers of other members of the Preston and related families.
